What is HIIT?

High-intensity interval training in plain words: what it is, what it does and how to try it

What makes it HIIT

Any exercise can become HIIT: running, cycling, rowing, bodyweight moves or kettlebells. What matters is the pattern: an effort hard enough that you couldn’t keep it up for long, then enough rest to do it again. Sprint interval training goes further, with short all-out sprints and long rests 3.

What it does

  • Fitness: HIIT improves VO2max, a key measure of fitness, and on average more than steady cardio 4.
  • Health: in people with heart and metabolic conditions, it improved fitness about twice as much as moderate exercise 1.
  • Fat loss: about as much as steady cardio, in less time 5,6.
  • Time: in one trial, three 10-minute sessions a week matched three 50-minute ones 7.

How to start

  1. Warm up for 5 to 10 minutes 8.
  2. Start with more rest than work, such as 20 seconds hard and 40 easy, for 8 rounds.
  3. Do it 2 or 3 times a week, with easier days between.
  4. Add rounds or shorten the rest as it gets easier.
